The Detroit Lions will be hosting the Green Bay Packers this Sunday afternoon at Ford Field.
This is one the oldest and longest rivalries in the National Football League dating back to the first game between the two clubs in 1930. The Lions then were headquartered in Portsmouth, Ohio and called themselves the Portsmouth Spartans. The final score in the first encounter was Portsmouth Spartans-19 and the Green Bay Packers-0. Since that game the Packers have dominated the Lions, at last count winning 101 games to the Lions 71.
One of the great games in National Football League history is when the teams got together back to 1962 on Thanksgiving day and in a surprise victory Detroit beat Green Bay 26-14. The Packers came into the game with a 10–0 record in first place and had won the NFL championship the year before.
