"On Friday 07-13-2018 at 12:27 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff's Deputies to the Lakestone Bank & Trust in Attica for a fraud circumstance with individuals still on site. Two males entered the business and were attempting to cash fraudulent payroll checks that displayed the name of a local business.
A bank teller became suspicious due to the abnormal amount of the payroll check. The teller contacted the business who confirmed that they were fraudulent checks. Both males departed the business while police were responding.
A 58-year-old male from Davison was a customer in the bank and followed one of the individuals out of the bank. The customer successfully had this individual return to the bank until police arrived. The second individual fled the scene and been associated to a 2015 or newer maroon in color Dodge Caravan.
Stanley Welch aged 65 from Detroit was immediately arrested and lodged at the Lapeer County Jail. Welch was formally criminally charged and arraigned for Uttering and Publishing. Welch remains incarcerated at the Lapeer County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond with next scheduled court date next week.
Deputy Nick Vandenberg's investigation identified the second male as a 54-year-old male from Detroit. Criminal charges are currently being sought for this second individual. This case currently remains investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies are working with Imlay City Police Department who had a similar situation occurred at the Lakestone Bank & Trust - Imlay City Branch."
