Overall, the unemployment rate in Michigan has edged steadily downward. Last week it dropped slightly to 7.4%, however the story is different in Lapeer County than for the rest of the state. The March jobless rate in Lapeer dropped to 11.2%, down a full percentage point from the previous month, but it is still far above the state average.

Just a few months ago the Lapeer jobless rate was double the state average. we've seen some improvement, but not nearly enough. Lapeer County is nearly two points higher than our next door neighbor, Genesee County. That means that from 6,500-8,500 Lapeer County residents are out of work. Hopefully, the renovation of M-24 will bring new life to the job market in Lapeer!
